One of the Original and Best OB Patient Tracker Apps Is Back But Comes at a Premium

Many of us in family medicine practice full-scope, including obstetrics. This is one of the most rewarding aspects of the specialty, but also one of the most challenging with very unpredictable hours and significant medical legal risk. Many other providers in primary care and OB/GYN may only provide outpatient prenatal care which is equally rewarding with a somewhat more predictable lifestyle. Regardless of what scope of obstetrics care you provide, a good OB wheel app is a must. However, an OB wheel only gets you so far. Ideally, you want an app that can not only quickly calculate an estimated date of confinement, but also allow you to track that patient from conception to delivery. Furthermore, you want an app that tracks labs/rads and reminds you of when key items for routine prenatal care are coming due/past due for a given patient. With so many different OB apps available, which one should we use?

My go-to OB patient tracker for years has been Dr. Evan Schoenberg’s app, Perfect OB Tracker. It combines an easy to use, accurate OB wheel with the option for patient tracking. This function automatically updates EGA, etc. every time you open the app and click on a particular patient. I eventually migrated to Dr. Greg Moore’s app, OB Patient Tracker. This app did essentially the same as Schoenberg’s app, but included more robust patient tracking details. Both apps briefly disappeared in the iOS upgrade to iOS 11 and its 64 bit compatibility requirement. Now both are back and Moore has just recently released OB Patient Tracker 2. If you are just looking for an OB Wheel App, then take a look at Steinberg’s OB Wheels which is available for both iOS and Android.

Evidence-based medicine

OB Patient Tracker 2 pushes beyond the standard OB wheel for dating pregnancies by incorporating detailed patient tracking including dating/delivery information, patient family information, labs/rads, birth plans, even patient location. The app does not seem to reference or include any links to current ACOG guidelines or other prenatal care information.

What providers would benefit from this App?

Students, residents, mid-levels, family medicine, midwives, OB/GYN, and any provider who performs obstetrics.

o Free to download and use for 7 days, then by subscription.

o Multiple methods of dating included and automatically updates info for each patient.

o Tracks labs/rads, procedural data/graphs of operative vs. vaginal deliveries.

o Numerous customizations including Dropbox backups, mapping, PIN protection, etc.

o No auto-reminders for key prenatal testing such labs/rads/counseling/etc.

o Allows for password protection on app but still some HIPAA concerns (Dropbox)

o Pricing and auto-renew of subscription could be problematic for some

o Not available for Android

The release of OB Patient Tracker 2 fills a void left by Perfect Ob Wheel and the original OB Patient Tracker. This is a very handy app for providers who regularly perform OB care as part of their practice. The app has a lot of potential for future enhancements and hope the subscription service brings and Android version and evidence based/guideline recommended testing/reminders to the app. The cost will likely be a turn-off for some, but the app’s simplicity and tracking functions may be worth it. Perfect OB Tracker is a less robust, but cost effective ($6.99) alternative.

Overall Score

o 4.0

User Interface

o 4.5

Although more complicated in some ways than the original version, this new version is more feature rich and yet still easy to use with nearly limitless customization and more robust tracking information/patient details.

Multimedia Usage

o 4.0 stars

Robust patient tracker function with labs/rads, Dropbox backup, statistics for procedures, and patient mapping. However, no links to any prenatal care guidelines/healthcare information.

o 3.0 stars

Subscription-only after the first seven days. Can subscribe for 1, 3, 6, or 12 months at various prices ($5.99, $15.99, $24.99, and $39.99) and auto-renew.

Real World Applicability

o 4.0 stars

For providers with a busy obstetrics practice and less than ideal EMR support, OB Patient Tracker 2 may be just the ticket. The app automatically updates important prenatal care dates for patients, tracks labs, ultrasounds, etc. The app provides metrics such as operative vs. cesarean section rates allowing for “procedure tracking”. However, the app lacks standard reminders based on established guidelines, and its premium pricing may force providers to look elsewhere or stick with a basic/free OB wheel app.

Device Used For Review

o iPhone 8 running iOS 12.2.

Available for download on iPhone and iPad. Not available on Android at this time.
