New York-Presbyterian Komansky Children’s Hospital has announced that the launch of virtual doctor’s visits for kids via the NYP OnDemand app.

NYP OnDemand launched last year offering services including virtual urgent-care visits, as well as second opinions with various specialists. It came in a year that saw many other medical institutions launch similar services, such as the virtual clinical offerings from USC.

NYP OnDemand now allows parents and caregivers the chance to speak with pediatric emergency physicians from 6 p.m. to midnight, seven days a week, on their website and their mobile application.

A doctor can consult with patients and assess children via HD video and, according to a press release, provide advice, treatment, medicine, or escalate the consult to an in-person evaluation.

It will be interesting to see how this platform ultimately comes to integrate with the growing number of health devices targeted to parents. For example, it’s not hard to imagine how Cellscope’s smartphone connected otoscope could fit into a virtual visit for an earache for kids with frequent ear infections.
