Many of us in Family Medicine and OB/GYN practice full scope including obstetrics; while even more providers perform prenatal care alone. The bonds between patient and provider during this 9 month journey are one of the most rewarding aspects of the specialty. However, obstetrics remains extremely challenging with very unpredictable hours and significant medical legal risk. Regardless of what scope of obstetrics care you provide, a good OB wheel app is a must.

With so many different OB apps available, which one should we use? Here on iMedicalApps we have reviewed numerous OB wheel apps over the years. We have listed our favorites for iOS and Android and reviewed a few others including the Ferring IVF Wheel and OB App Suite. Previously, I reviewed OB Wheels by Dr Joshua Steinberg which incorporated the 2014 ACOG Bulletin on dating pregnancies. The latest entry into the OB wheel category is OB Calc Pro by Glenn Botha with assistance from Dr Rosanne Botha, an OB/GYN. The medical app has all of the typical methods of calculating gestational age such as LMP, EDC, and sonography. Additionally, the app adds dating based on crown-rump length measurement and reminders of other important timelines such as genetic testing.

Clinical Scenario

You are seeing your new continuity obstetric patient today. The pregnancy appears uncomplicated based on prenatal labs and maternal history, but the patient is not entirely sure of her LMP. Your colleague performed a first trimester ultrasound a week ago that shows a crown rump length of 24 mm. What is this patient’s due date? When should she undergo prenatal genetic testing? Let’s take a look at OB Calc Pro in action.

Video Review of the OB Calc Pro Medical app

Evidence based medicine

OB Calc Pro is a basic OB wheel app with a unique “spin” of including recommended testing dates for 1st and 2nd trimester genetic screening, ultrasonography, etc. The app does not include any references such as the most current ACOG guideline, but its calculations appear to be consistent with other available OB wheel apps.

What providers would benefit from the OB Calc Pro Medical app?

Students, residents, mid-levels, Family Medicine, Midwives, OB/GYN and any provider who performs obstetrics.

  • Overall

OB Calc Pro is a good but somewhat disappointing OB wheel app mostly due to price for a medical app with a lackluster interface. However, its functional and includes some gestational dating information lacking in other medical apps and has limited customizability.

Good, especially the ability to customize and add your own important dates.

Can email patients their “important dates” from within the app. No references. No patient tracker function.

  • Price

App is relatively expensive compared with others on the market with similar functionality.
