Health Maintenance Visits are consistently in the top ten visits to primary care physicians. The beauty and challenge of a specialty such as Family Medicine is trying to keep straight what care must be provided to patients of various ages. In my morning clinic yesterday, I saw a new OB patient at 9 weeks gestation, another at 28 weeks, a 6 month well-child, a 21 year-old female well-woman, and 50, 65, and 82 year-olds all for “annual exams”. My previous go to medical apps for days like this include the excellent AHRQ ePSS, Bright Futures, and Pregnancy A to Z apps. But wouldn’t clinic be even better if there was an app that contained all of this information in one place?

Dr Joshua Steinberg comes to the rescue again! This time he teamed up with Dr Paula Dygert, MD at Providence Family Medicine Residency in Spokane, WA, to create a quick reference medical ap for students, residents and faculty in primary care. This past year alone he has released many medical apps that I have reviewed here on iMedicalApps: PneumoVaccines, Depo Calendar, OB Wheels, Gout Diagnosis, and Step-by-Step Febrile Infant. Other useful point of care medical apps by Dr Steinberg include PreopEval14, PFT Eval, EFM Guide, PE & DVT Dx Tool, and my favorite, Pneumonia Guide.

Clinical Scenario

You are a fourth year medical student starting your month-long rotation in Family Medicine. You are surprised to see such diversity of visits on your attending’s schedule. The schedule includes a 36 week prenatal care visit, a 24 month well-child visit, a 16 year old adolescent visit, a 28 year old well-woman visit and a 55 year-old annual exam. What will you have to ask, check, order, and prescribe at each of these visits? What counseling must be provided? The Health Maintenance Visits app will help you with these decisions! Let’s take a look at the medical app in action.
