At iMedicalApps we have written extensively on concussion management apps, and even did a literature review on how concussion management apps should be developed. Using our literature review, in 2014 we crowned a concussion screening app that met literature guidelines. Since then, concussion management apps have only received more attention.
There are anywhere from 1.6 million to 3.8 people in the U.S. who are affected with concussions, and Houston-based startup BrainCheck wants to offer a way to track and diagnose these concussions via a mobile app. Investors agree and have given BrainCheck $3 million in seed funding.
Schools, trainers, and families currently utilize BrainCheck’s interactive iOS-based platform. With the new round of funding, BrainCheck hopes to expand the company’s reach geographically and demographically by moving beyond concussion monitoring. Brain training apps have been shown to assist with cognitive rehab for those with dementia and multiple sclerosis. BrainCheck could be instrumental for these groups too.
Thanks to the FTC crackdown on medical apps, like levying a $50 million dollar fine on Lumonisty, BrainCheck is careful to call itself a “tracker.” But the company is willing to work with the FDA to categorize the app as a class 2 medical device.
