Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disease that affects many organs, primarily the lungs. The disease causes bodily fluids such as sweat and mucus to become thicker than normal. Some common symptoms include shortness of breath, coughing, and difficulty gaining weight or growing.
The disease was discovered in the 1930s and symptoms have been described in literature as far back as the 1500’s. It is estimated that nearly 70,000 individuals suffer from Cystic fIbrosis. Patients with Cystic Fibrosis can now use the CF Buzz app to help manage their disease.
The inspiration for the medical app was a result of the difficulties faced by CF patients. To keep track of the disease, many patients would maintain paper records. Although some patients used mobile phone apps, many of these apps did not address all aspects of Cystic Fibrosis. The goal of this Cystic Fibrosis app is to help patients manage CF on their own and set targets to achieve their goals.
The medical app was developed by Tata Consultancy Services in partnership with the Cystic Fibrosis New South Wales foundation. Although the app was created in Australia, the hope is to benefit patients around the world.
A main aspect of living with CF is maintaining a healthy weight and getting enough nutrients. The medical app contains different screens showing different nutrients including vitamins, enzymes, and minerals required by the body. It provides a goal CF patients need to reach and how they can reach it. For example, the medical app may list a certain amount of Vitamin D needed per day and the supplements that can help achieve this goal.
Besides including sources of minerals and vitamins that the user can potentially use to achieve daily goals, the CF buzz also mentions the benefits of taking them. This could help patients feel more motivated to take the needed supplements.
CF patients can also use this app to record the enzymes they use for various meals throughout the day. For example, the medical app allows users to note the type of enzyme, the meal, and the quantity used during the meal.
One major issue faced by Cystic Fibrosis patients is keeping track of medications. Since many drugs are used to help treat CF, patients may forget to order prescriptions on time. Fortunately, the app allows patients to record how many times per day they need to take the medicine and the amount of medicine available, along with the date they need new prescriptions. It will also remind patients when they need to order a new prescription.
Besides recording medications and supplements needed, CF buzz also allows users to set goals and plans. Maintaining a healthy weight is often an issue with CF patients. The app allows users to input their weight and reports the BMI level which may help determine if the weight is at a healthy level. Other statistics can be recorded including lung capacity. Finally, patients can also enter in various plans recommended by their medical team and actions required.
Cystic fibrosis (CF) can be a difficult disease to manage with all the medications and supplements required. Fortunately, the CF Buzz app helps patients keep track of the medications, enzymes, body weight, and other details. For a few dollars at the iTunes store, the burden of managing this disease can be eased.
