Review of iAnkylosing Spondylitis for iPhone and iPad App
Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is the most common form of sero-negative spondyloarthritis, affecting between 0.1-0.5% of the population. This is a unique condition that has been affecting patients’ joints for thousands of years. Three pharaohs in ancient Eygpt were known to have AS. It was not until 1693, however, that an Irish physician first described the condition. Since that time, the medical community has worked to try to understand and treat this condition.
Anatomate-Apps has created an app, iAnkylosingSpondylitis Pro, that aims to provide patients with an overview of the condition and treatment options. The app has a simple design but contains an impressive amount of information in animations, presentations, images and text. The content is very well researched with information from rheumatology journals, UpToDate, and eMedicine. This makes for a useful and credible app for individuals with this condition or anyone trying to learn more about AS.
The mobile app opens with a list of sections on a “Main Menu” page. There are sections related to “Diagnosis” “Non-Pharmacological Management” “Pharmacological Management” “Anatomy” and much more. This list format highlights whether the section content includes a video, text document, or folder with more content. The user simply scrolls through to learn more about the desired topic.
The presentations are delivered in a clear and well articulated fashion. The video is high resolution and the audio is appropriate although somewhat monotone. The text is easy to follow and the videos are short and to the point.
The user can also view several medical images to better appreciate the condition. This includes artist drawings, images, and radiographic tests. The radiographs are great quality and highlight common findings on images such as xrays and CT scans. This would help many patients interpret and understand their own radiographs and scans.
Under the non-pharmacologic treatment section are a series of animations focused on stretching techniques. The app contains many exercises that are clearly explained in the animation format. Physicians would appreciate the app for teaching patients how to clearly perform certain exercises.
This app does an excellent job of summarizing a complex condition. I am impressed with the amount of material in the app and believe several different groups could benefit from the app content. The price for the Pro version is a little much but worthwhile to those looking for a mobile education app for AS.
