It’s the fall and that means it’s football season. Athletic trainers across the country are covering high school football teams and staying very busy with numerous athletic injuries. Athletic trainers across all levels of professional and non-professional sports have an important role taking care of athletes and returning them to the sports they love.

The new Trainer Tool app is designed specifically for athletic trainers. One of the most tedious jobs an athletic trainer has to perform is going through the long list of athlete injuries and treatment plans after a game. They typically enter this information into records known as SOAP notes. The S stands for subjective information, the O for objective information, and the AP for assessment and plan. This app simplifies the task of entering SOAP notes with a mobile and electronic record that athletic trainers can update on the field.

Although this is very convenient, this data includes protected health information and the Trainer Tool does not openly address security features or HIPAA compliance. It appears the onus is on the trainer to use secure device settings and employer-approved security features. This is an issue that needs to be addressed in future updates.

User Interface

The athletic trainer must sign up for a Trainer Tool account before using the app. The app opens with a list format for navigation.

There are three main sections in the mobile app. The first is for entering new SOAP notes, the second for managing SOAP notes, and the third is for entering patient information.

The patient information section is useful for uploading important biographical information on each of the athletes playing on a sports team. When an athlete has a problem or injury during the sporting season, the athletic trainer can quickly access the previously entered information in the app. From this patient profile, they can enter a SOAP note.

Entering SOAP notes is very easy. There is a comprehensive list of prompts covering important subjective, objective, and physical exam findings. The app even allows for recording referral information and follow-up plans for meeting with other medical professionals.

This app is very well-designed and potentially very useful to an athletic trainer looking for a mobile electronic alternative to streamline their record keeping. The greatest limitation of this app is the cost associated with the user account. There’s not a singular purchase price for this mobile app; instead the user must subscribe to a service that can cost $100 or more per year. The benefit of subscribing, however, is that the user can enter unlimited notes and athletes. The user also has access to the Trainer Tool website which allows for easily emailing and copying recorded information through the app.
