Use of mobile apps to support orthopedic surgeons in a range of clinical situations has been widely recognized. The ability to access clinical knowledge on the go or explain various pathologies to patients whilst utilizing a range of media has the potential to significantly improve clinical practice. There are a host of excellent medical apps for orthopedic surgeons which can be used for educational and clinical purposes.

This article is a useful starting point for surgeons keen to identify and integrate useful medical apps in their daily workflow. Many of these applications are available for both iPhone, iPad and Android. AO Surgery Reference:

AO Surgery Reference is a comprehensive resource containing a wide range of information regarding all aspects of trauma management. It describes the complete surgical management process from diagnosis to aftercare for all fractures of a given anatomical region, and also assembles relevant material that the AO has published before. Developed by the well known AO Foundation, this app is an indelibly useful starting resource for accessing the treatment and management of a range of traumatic fractures. This app also includes a range of useful procedural and operative details which are useful for reviewing relevant anatomy. The scope and depth of content is extremely high which is aided by the reliability of the source.

ShoulderDoc:

ShoulderDoc is the accompanying app to the ShoulderDoc website which is well renowned for its useful shoulder related content. This includes information related to a range of common shoulder complaints  alongside associated references. This detailed app contains a range of information for surgeons and patients as well as useful images and videos. Other sections in this app allow patients and other healthcare professionals to access information regarding all aspects of a surgical procedure.
