Purpose of App Review

- to analyze the utility of the app for tracking caffeine use

Caffeine comes in many forms of food and drink including coffee, tea, soda, and chocolate. Like the other things we eat, caffeine can affect our body and its processes, including those of a pregnancy and a fetus.
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends no more than 200 milligrams of caffeine per day to avoid these effects.
The Pregnancy Caffeine Monitor app seeks to provide the ability to track caffeine intake from common sources.
The Home page of the app provides a list of sources of caffeine, generally organized by brand.
The top portion of the app also provides the recommendation for buying your drink caffeinated or not. As you approach the caffeine limits, the top toolbar changes to a red color.
The bottom toolbar allows you to restart the count by clearing the day’s entries. To enter a caffeine entry, you select the brand of choice. Subsequent menus then allow you to select the drink and size.
After selecting the size, you are taken back to the Home screen. The bottom portion then lists your caffeine intake.
The red bar shows the daily recommended limit, while the lower bar shows your combined intake for the day. Above the bars, your intake for the day is listed numerically, as well as how that intake was achieved.

- Pregnant patients who wish to monitor and potentially limit their caffeine intake during pregnancy
- The Pregnancy Caffeine Monitor medical app provides a helpful, but limited portable app to log your caffeine intake. The app provides several different brands of caffeinated drinks, but underutilizes the iPhone’s capabilities and has not been recently updated. It also does not cite the references it uses for caffeine limitations.
