Purpose of App Review
- To evaluate the value of a chemistry app for medical and PhD students.
Chemistry Helper aims to achieve exactly what its name implies–to help with basic chemistry formulas and element reference.
Geared more toward the novice chemistry learner and/or medical student, this app contains many helpful reference materials as well as some interactive calculation tools.
The following is a complete list of all the features offered in Chemistry Helper:
- Periodic Table
- Molecular Mass Calculator
- Formula Tools
- Common Polyatomic Ions
- Physical Constants
- Solubility Rules
- Solution Tools
- Conversion Tools
- Compound Lookup
- Reduction Potentials
- Organic Groups
- Organic Reactions Quiz
- IR Spectra
- H1 NMR
- C13 NMR
- Common Ligands
The breadth of different information in the options listed is vast. Some options bring the user to diagrams and compound structures. Others supply general information on a concept or link out to other resources on the web. Chemistry Helper seems to pull information from many different platforms and offers an authoritative overview of many common facets in the field of chemistry.
One of Chemistry Helper’s usability strengths is its simple design. The Home screen of the app is an intuitive list of options for users to choose from. This simplicity lends itself nicely to users of any mobile tech level. The structure of the content behind the scenes is evident in the display of the information when users choose an option or use/create a formula. The strong backend hierarchy offers a seamless and pleasant user experience.
The only qualm about the interface that was apparent was in the Formulas section. Converting from Grams to Moles (and vice versa) in some instances seemed glitchy. Also, an error message appeared occasionally asking to “make sure all fields are filled in” even when all required fields had been filled in. Other than this, the app functions exceptionally well and offers a comprehensive review of chemistry basics.
- Intuitive design and easy to understand navigation and flow
- Calulator and formula features are a big plus
- The periodic table and other general reference information is replete
- Converting from Grams to Moles (and vice versa) does not function properly
Chemistry Helper offers a sleak design and (nearly) fully functional formula and calculation features. It is a useful mobile resource mostly for students but can also translate to the professional arena in certain circumstances.
Rating: (1 to 5 stars) – 4.75
- User Interface – 5
- Multimedia usage – 4
- Price – 5
- Real world applicability – 5
