Visible Body is a content and software development firm that produces anatomy and physiology learning products.

Visible Body produces highly detailed, anatomically accurate, 3D models. Their Human Body Atlas app has been around for a while for iOS devices and recently they’ve released the Android version.

Join us while we take a look at it.

User Interface

Android devices suffer a great deal of fragmentation. As such, there are lots of devices whose specifications vary and not all these Android devices will be able to run the Human Body Atlas app. It’s necessary to keep in mind the minimum requirements before attempting to launch this app or else there will be disappointed.

Device Requirements

  • 1 GHz processor or higher
  • 512 MB RAM or higher
  • 480 x 800 pixel display or larger

In order to assess how badly fragmentation hits this app we tested it on 2 devices: a Droid 3 phone (a device that meets the bare minimum specs) and a Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1.

Human Body Atlas

We launched the app on both devices and it took some time for it to initialize. Once that was done, we see the main screen which lets us choose the gender of the model we will be using. There is a listing of the different systems that we can check out and after a few taps we are all set and ready to be dazzled. This is where Human Body Atlas really shines, the 3D models are stunningly beautiful.

To navigate the model simply tap on an area to highlight it. Once highlighted, we can get a definition of the area which usually consists of a brief explanation just a couple of paragraphs long. We can rotate the image by swiping with one finger and move it around using two fingers. Zooming in and out is performed by pinching the screen. The different structures can be hidden or made see-through by tapping on the show, fade and hide buttons.

Human Body Atlas also comes with a search function and a quiz section. All in all, the app performed well in both devices though it crashed every once in awhile on the Droid 3, probably due to RAM issues.

  • $34.90

  • The graphics are amazing
  • User interface is simple and intuitive
  • Great for learning

  • Frequent crashes on devices with only 512MB RAM

  • Human Body Atlas is a great app and will certainly be of use to physicians, students and even patient educators.
  • The attractive graphics of this app will be of great help when trying to understand human anatomy and surgical procedures.
  • The controls are very intuitive and allow the user to explore and learn easily.
  • Visible Body’s app is a great tool for your tablet but it might not be the best match for your mobile phone as it is quite a resource hog.
