Purpose of App Review

The purpose of this app review is to investigate the uses that Animated Pocket Dictionary of Hypertension can have for medical students and physicians.

We will try to answer the questions:

  • Is the information present sound
  • Would healthcare professionals find it useful?

Hypertension is already a highly prevalent cardiovascular risk factor worldwide because of increasing longevity and prevalence of contributing factors such as obesity. Whereas the treatment of hypertension has been shown to prevent cardiovascular diseases and to extend and enhance life, hypertension remains inadequately managed everywhere.

A case could be made that this condition is less understood than it should be. Perhaps this can be addressed by providing the information in new ways.

The proper use of animations and visual aid can play a significant role in helping to understand a topic, so we will take a closer look at Focus Medica‘s Animated Pocket Dictionary of Hypertension.

User Interface

Animated Dictionary of Hypertension

As we launch the app, we are presented with a listing of over 85 hypertension-related medical terms with 3D animations. Each medical term is explained through written definitions which sometimes tend to err on the side of simplicity. For instance, the one depicted below is a relatively simple definition.

Basic definitions

Even though the term is indeed explained by such a definition, there’s still plenty of valuable information left out that could be mentioned. We understand that this is just a “pocket” dictionary but perhaps adding a line or two about whether or not something is clinically relevant would be appreciated.

User interface

The free version comes with only a handfull of animations and definitions while the full version allows access to all entries.

  • The app comes in two versions. A free one and a paid one which is $7.21

  • Animations look great

  • Definitions could have more information

Healthcare providers that would benefit from the app

  • Given the basic level of information that the app provides, one can only recommend this app to students who are just starting. Additionally, physicians may be interested who are looking for a way to educate those patients who are into learning about their condition.
