Naturally, for such a long list of lab tests, dedicated search functions, bookmarks (“Favorites”), and history (“Recently Viewed”) options are definitely needed and are available.

Immediately after jumping into the Medical Abbreviations section, a very long list of abbreviations is presented. The list was so intense that even my recently purchased Samsung Galaxy S3 developed a little case of the hiccups. The abbreviations are useful, but perhaps not so much needed for on-the-spot use in the clinical setting.

More often than not, I found myself using it for my own curiosity. Thanks to Lab Values+, I now know the abbreviation “AC” is from the Latin term “ante cibum,” which I thought was pretty interesting!

The developers went out and beyond to add quick Google and Wikipedia searches when users tap on either the abbreviation or explanations. Again, users can bookmark their favorite abbreviations or look up his or her own browsing history under the “Recently Viewed” tab.

Medical Prefix/Suffix is the last feature of Lab Values+ that is presented very much like the Medical Abbreviation section. Other than providing the explanation and sample medical word for each prefix or suffix, the developers managed to include the origin language and etymology for each inquiry as well.

Again, other than satisfying one’s curiosity, the utility of this function is quite limited and is perhaps not so much intended to be used on the floors in the hospital or in the clinic. “Favorites” and “Recently Viewed” functions are also available here.

There are many positive things to say about Lab Values+: from their interface design, the selection of information, to the thoughtful interlinks between “related labs.”

However, customization is by far the strongest feature that the developers have included into this app. Almost everything is customizable: from the already entered lab values to making your own lists, labs, abbreviations, prefix, or suffixes. Standard lab value ranges may differ from that of the local population or from laboratory to laboratory. In such situations, being able to change the values and descriptions to reflect the local community or institution’s becomes important.
