The New England Journal of Medicine is one of, if not the, premier journal of medical literature. So we’ve been at a loss for some time as to why this venerable resource hadn’t yet found its way to the tablet platform. Well, judging by the app they have released, at least part of the reason appears to have been that the folks at NEJM have been working on it for some time.

The NEJM iPad Edition bridges content from the print issues with audio, share, search, and notation features in an integrated, easy-to-navigate format. This app is designed to take advantage of the larger screen of the iPad tablet and includes a fresh layout that is iPad friendly.

The  NEJM iPad app is free to download in iTunes, although a subscription to the NEJM is still required to use all of its features.  All users can view a fully functional free issue, preview the table of contents for each issue and read Online First articles. Individual NEJM and NEJM.org subscribers have full access to all that the iPad edition has to offer. On first pass, it does not appear that folks that access NEJM through institutional subscriptions get that level of access though.

From within the app, app-only subscriptions to the NEJM iPad Edition are available for $14.99 per month, and single issues are available for purchase of $5.99. App-only subscriptions do not include access to NEJM.org.

NEJM publisher Thomas J. Easley describes the iPad app,

“We are pleased to offer this additional value to individual NEJM subscribers and to provide a new offering for non-subscribers. As physicians and other medical professionals change the way they engage with clinical and research content, we are available to them on multiple platforms, and are optimizing our own properties for the mobile web. This new app takes advantage of the iPad technology to deliver a truly enhanced reading experience.”

NEJM editor-in-chief, Jeffrey M. Drazen, M.D outlines the major benefit of the app,

“Doctors don’t spend much time behind their desks. They are on the go, caring for patients. With the NEJM iPad Edition, relevant clinical information is right at our fingertips. Readers now have a way to carry multiple issues with them, make notes to share with colleagues, and show images in a meeting or on the floor of the hospital.”

The NEJM iPad app is the latest in a series of product enhancements and offerings from NEJM to create accessible, mobile solutions for today’s busy healthcare providers including their great iPhone apps.
