7. Procedures Consult: Internal Medicine
Every week on the floors and in clinic (and every day in the Intensive Care Units), Internal Medicine Residents tackle procedures such as central line placement (IJ, subclavian, and femoral), thoracentesis, paracentesis, lumbar puncture, arterial line placement, and arthrocentesis, to name the most commonly performed procedures.
Procedures are a significant part of what we do as residents, and mastering them is crucial to becoming a strong resident. The strongest app we have found to facilitate mastery of common procedures is Procedures Consult: Internal Medicine from Elsevier. This app, while somewhat expensive, explores 25 Internal Medicine procedures, using text, pictures, and video to take users from pre-procedure through the procedure and post-procedure. Procedures Consult represents an outstanding resource to assist in procedural skills.
