8. PubMed Mobile

Every Internal Medicine Resident is aware of the utility of PubMed in locating primary literature when learning more about their patients’ illnesses or confronting therapeutic dilemmas. In March 2011, the US National Library of Medicine (NLM) finally launched a mobile-friendly version of PubMed.gov.

While PubMed Mobile does not yet support the search parameters or limits available on the desktop PubMed search experience (without having to enter custom code – refer to our review), it does offer the ability to conduct basic PubMed searches through the browser of any handheld device. The web app also allows for easy narrowing of results to “Free Articles” and facilitates opening pdf versions of these articles on your smartphone. In this manner, PubMed Mobile represents a useful tool to locate primary literature at your fingertips. We expect the addition of enhanced native search parameters with time, as the National Library of Medicine is fully aware of the increasing use of mobile browsing for medical content among healthcare professionals.
