The shocking events of Tucson have gripped the nation and left many searching for a glimmer of good news. The dramatic recovery of Representative Giffords after a short range bullet injury to her brain have been among the few such gifts.

While the reports of her opening her eyes, and yesterday, standing have been encouraging, today’s report by Reuters that she is able to use an iPad is almost amazing.

According to Dr. Michael Lemole, chief of neurology at University Medical Center

She is beginning to stand with assistance, she is scrolling through an iPad — these are all fantastic advances for her. They do show higher cognitive function

While we have commented before on the potential role of the iPad in the setting of traumatic brain injuries, this example easily highlights the potential for lightweight, touch screen devices to help patients with cognitive and motor deficits.
