AllScripts Clinical Decision Support Challenge - http://www.allscripts.com/cdschallenge

The Allscripts Million Hearts Initiative CDS Challenge offers a $50,000 prize to the person or group that creates a publicly available resource that accelerates the delivery of optimal care for the millions of patients in the United States with cardiovascular disease through clinical decision support functionality. Our goal is to accomplish this by facilitating the translation of the CDS rules associated with the Million Hearts Initiative into an unambiguous, machine-readable format that can be "read" by any Electronic Health Record (EHR). Allscripts will provide materials, including an XML format that participants may use in the development of the solution if desired.

    ONC Discharge Folllow-Up Appointment Challenge - http://www.health2challenge.org/discharge-follow-up-appointment-challenge/

The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC), in collaboration with the Partnership for Patients, supports the spread and adoption of promising IT-enabled solutions targeting improved care transitions in the “Discharge Follow-Up Appointment Challenge.” Nearly one in five patients from a hospital is readmitted within 30 days. A large proportion of readmissions can be prevented by improving communications and coordinating care before and after discharge from the hospital.

This competition is the second in a series of challenges calling attention to care transitions, particularly the time a patient is discharged from a hospital; these challenges seek the development and spread of IT-enabled tools that help achieve better care and better health at lower cost. The first challenge, “Ensuring Safe Transitions from Hospital to Home,” called upon developers to create a web-based application that could empower patients and caregivers to better navigate and manage a transition from a hospital.

Janssen Healthcare Innovation Challenge - http://www.janssenhealthcareinnovation.com/connected-care-challenge

The Janssen Connected Care Challenge is looking for approaches that will improve the patient’s transition from hospital to home. This challenge is designed to spur innovation and drive action towards achieving better care and better health at lower cost through continuous improvement. [They] know greatness is achieved when we work together, and [they] are committed to playing a pivotal role in invigorating the marketplace of ideas.

[They] want to hear about solutions to improve the coordination of care as patients are discharged after surgery or other inpatient stays. It is an issue that vexes our healthcare system, burdens our federal healthcare programs, and most importantly, negatively impact individual's lives. Janssen Healthcare Innovation will award a total of $250,000 to entrepreneurs with the best solutions for improving care transitions. Submissions will be reviewed by a panel of distinguished visionaries and practitioners in the areas of innovation, technology, care transitions and healthcare who have agreed to act as judges for the contest. Members of the Janssen Healthcare Innovation team will provide the three finalists mentorship and support to further advance commercial development of the best ideas that address our challenge. Ready to dazzle us with your solution?

    2012 DataDesignDiabetes Challenge - http://www.datadesigndiabetes.com/

[Below from the challenge blog (http://www.datadesigndiabetes.com/blog/announcing-the-2012-innovation-challenge/)

    Calling all innovators!

This morning at the Care Innovations Summit in Washington, D.C., Dennis Urbaniak, VP U.S. Diabetes at Sanofi, announced the launch of the 2012 Data Design Diabetes Innovation Challenge. We are delighted to continue working with the innovation community as we search for the next breakthrough in diabetes!

    What’s new this year?

In 2012, Data Design Diabetes will be structured to drive innovation in the quality, delivery, and cost of diabetes care. The Innovation Challenge process will begin by crowdsourcing answers to the question “What matters most to you?” on our website. Insights from the crowd will help determine the criteria for the Innovation Challenge. Visit http://www.datadesigndiabetes.com and let us know what matters most to you!

Open submissions will begin on February 23 once the parameters of this year’s Innovation Challenge have been determined. Like last year, five semi-finalists will be awarded $20,000 and selected to participate in an intensive mentorship program over the course of a month. In addition, semi-finalists will attend a Design Bootcamp where they will learn about human-centered design, user experience, and rapid prototyping from industry experts. We believe this added layer will result in the development of even more robust prototypes during the semi-finalist stage!

In addition, we are excited to be working with Startup America to make sure that all innovators have access to the entrepreneurship tools they need to grow successful companies.

WIMM Labs health and fitness micro app contest

    http://support.wimm.com/entries/20894923-contest-for-health-and-fitness-micro-apps-1-19-2-5

    [From the WIMM Labs forum]

Building on the success (yours and ours!) of our recent Micro App contest, we are hosting another contest focusing exclusively on Health and Fitness Micro Apps!

    Prizes:

    - A free WIMM One to anyone who submits a novel, sophisticated, stable app with thoughtful UI (see criteria below). (Disclaimer: If you’ve already received a free device from us, we cannot send you another so that we can share the love!)

    - $250 Amazon gift cards to the two best apps from this contest.

Criteria: A winning Micro App should…

    - focus on health care (patients, doctors, hospitals, medications, body data, remote care, etc.) or fitness (amateurs, professionals, training, competition, measurement, workout tracking, weight loss, diabetes control, etc.)

    - be different than what others have posted to the Alpha or Beta forums, if not in idea, at least in implementation.

    - take a complicated problem and sophisticated features and make them seem simple, available at a glance.

    - solve a problem that LOTS of people experience. Please aim for large target audiences across multiple geographies.

    - run perfectly in the emulator, and (hopefully) smoothly on actual hardware. Please search the relevant forums for common mistakes.

    - incorporate Internet data and accelerometers to gain extra credit (Obviously, only useful to the goal of the app!)

    - gain popularity in the forums! We pay attention to the number of votes that your post has garnered.

    Alzheimer's Challenge 2012 - https://www.alzheimerschallenge2012.com/

    [From the challenge website https://www.alzheimerschallenge2012.com/about/about_the_challenge.php

The Alzheimer’s Challenge 2012 seeks the development of simple, cost-effective, consistent tools that could be easily used to assess memory, mood, thinking and activity level over time to help improve diagnosis and monitoring of people with Alzheimer’s disease. Today, easy to use, reliable, objective and cost-efficient methods to track and monitor Alzheimer’s disease -- which is not a normal part of aging -- remain an unmet need. The Alzheimer’s Challenge 2012 supports the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) call to harness new thinking to deliver better care and better health at lower cost and provides an entrepreneurial springboard to harness new thinking and approaches to improve Alzheimer’s care.

The Alzheimer’s Challenge 2012 includes awards totaling $300,000. This incorporates $25,000 to five finalists and $175,000 to one winner of the Challenge.

Following the March 16, 2012 submission deadline, five finalists will be selected and announced by April 16, 2012. Each finalist will be awarded $25,000. Concept refinement will be completed by mid June 2012 with finalist presentations to follow. The winner of the Challenge will be announced at the end of June 2012 and awarded a $175,000 prize. Judges will be drawn from experts in the Alzheimer’s community and other related fields.
