Has anyone discovered any cool accessories out there that really enhance the functionality of the iPad? I am always looking for ways to find new gadgets out there.

Posted 4 months ago #I use a keyboard carry case made by Zagg. Makes inputting data slightly easier and also protects theipad while I carry it around the wards.

from the comments I was reading it looks like it doesn't prop up the iPad, but does have a built in prop for iPhone

iPad 2, Galaxy Nexus, iPhone 4sPosted 4 months ago #An interesting issue raised here is why use a keyboard at all with an iPad. Obviously there are certain niche groups like writers who have a need for a keyboard but I do not see doctors needing a separate keyboard. It raises an interesting question of why go for an iPad at all rather than some of the impressive ultrabooks we are seeing now. Battery life is clearly an issue with these ultrabooks (and one of the ipads strengths).
I am interested to know if you would rather use an 11inch ultrabook (assuming it had equivalent battery life to an iPad for the purposes of this thought experiment) or an iPad with a keyboard case. If you chose the iPad then I ask why??
Posted 4 months ago #Tom, I use an iPad with a keyboard, and the combination is perfect for me. Most of the time the keyboard (Apple's bluetooth wireless model) stays in my bag, and I use the iPad alone. A few times a week I have a lot of typing to do, usually long emails and occasionally my own notes, and then I pull out the keyboard. This is superior to the ultra book solution for me, since the iPad alone is sufficient for the bulk of what I do. It is light, fun to use, and very fast at what it does.
Posted 4 months ago #For me using a keyboard is essential on the iPad -- especially if I'm using the EMR. When doing daily progress notes it's impossible to do it using the touch keyboard on the iPad, even with the new split keyboard that makes typing easier. The nice thing about using the iPad is that when I don't need to write a note, and just need to do a quick round on my patients I can pop my iPad out of the keyboard, and then I can carry it around and look at patient labs/notes right before I go into their rooms. (this is when I'm on rotations other than the ED of course, such as the ICU)
Posted 4 months ago #I was interested in that keyboard, but the funding round on Kickstarter is already over. Seems like it would be easy to clean (no moving parts) + to carry around... It will probably be released to the public at some point; I'll keep an eye on it for sure.

@marckemil on TwitterPosted 4 months ago #Iltifat, I have the Logitech one http://www.zagg.com/accessories/logitech-ipad-2-keyboard-case which does prop up the iPad.
Tom, I'm with Ash and Iltifat - keyboard when needed (admission notes, letters, data entry) otherwise it's a protective carry case when I'm using it to check labs, etc.
Marc, touchscreen looks good, but I prefer the extra screen real estate I get with the Bluetooth keyboard.
Posted 4 months ago #@Marc I have to admit, I hardly looked at the Touch Fire keyboard that you referenced when it was first hyped in the media. But I clicked on your link, and after seeing the video for it I'm actually impressed. It's got a cool magnet system for staying on the iPad, and the fact that it rolls up with the smart cover is pretty cool. But agree w/ Corbetron on this one, takes up too much real estate that is critical when trying to type up notes. It would be good for typing up docs though -- again, even using it for annotation would be difficult because of how much screen real estate it would take up.
This looks like the dream scenario, the Transformer Prime:

Posted 4 months ago #Another very good iPad keyboard is this one: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Logitech-Tablet-Keyboard-for-iPad/dp/B0053FAL24/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1329685983&sr=8-2
I have used it for long hour typing and it is really comfortable. I was actually thinking of replacing even my desktops keyboard with this one.
iPhone 4, iPadPosted 3 months ago #The problem I have with this one is the inability to use it in my lap. The setup appears to be too much effort.
Posted 2 months ago #You, definitely, can't use this on your lap but I don't think that the setup is much time consuming. Since, you have tethered it with your device once and you have the bluetooth activated it takes a second to connect when you switch the keyboard on.
