As physicians we try to ease their anxieties by doing step by step explanations. However, our office is not always the best environment for patient’s to feel relaxed in and they may prefer to reflect on the upcoming surgery in the comfort of their own home.
Virtual Knee Surgery is a medical game app developed by Evokative Games. The game allows the user to be walked through a knee surgery in a gamified manner. Join us while we take a look at it.
Launching the Virtual Knee Surgery app presents us with a single Play button and the option to check out more games from the developer. As we tap to play, we start our tour around the Operating Room by preparing our patient for the surgery.
Voice actors explain to the user the different steps of a typical knee surgery and the app allows us to use the virtual tools to perform them. In this manner, the game allows the user to apply the preoperative skin antiseptics for preventing surgical wound infections, use the scalpel to make incisions, etc. Animations aid in illustrating the more complex steps and the experience is entertaining.
The information is solid and clear, though, not the most exhaustive. Virtual Knee Surgery strives to achieve a balance between being entertaining and educational which is why, at times, the information might seem to be giving the user an eagle’s view instead of a proper explanation.
