Google has now officially launched a medical category for the Android Marketplace apps. Less than two months ago we had penned an open letter to Google titled “Dear Google: please make a medical category for apps in the Android Marketplace” — we’d like to think they were listening.
iMedicalApps broke this story earlier in the week when tipped off by reliable sources — we reported on Sunday that Google would launch a medical section within the week.
As mentioned in the prior story this is great news for medical professionals. On initial glimpse of the medical section of the Marketplace, the apps appear to be categorized correctly, a problem the Apple App Store is still plagued with.
Attached are pictures of the Medical section of the Android Marketplace apps on a Dell Streak and other smartphones, including a picture of the top paid medical apps on Android by downloads — a list that is sure to fluctuate a great deal. We’ll present many more details in the upcoming days.

was waiting for this, finally!
awesome, you guys did a great job with that open letter and now this!
Thanks. Great to share good news.
Nicely done!
So… what other open letters are you going to write?
This is excellent. This medical category is useful for all of us. I have tested it on my Android app. I really appreciate the cause.
It is becoming more and more important that “Android” applications state whether or not they are tablet(Xoom) compatible. There are Android Market applications that “force close” on tablets. I am making a decision for a medical practice that I administer, and that kind of information would eliminate planning mistakes.
