I read two articles published through the New York Times that the eye strain is simply our inability to blink when looking at LCD screens. If you train yourself to blink periodically, the fabled "eye strain" is eliminated.

I use both iBooks and the Kindle app on the iPad and find them equally satisfactory for reading purposes. iBooks, not surprisingly, is slicker and purchases are in-app (as opposed to via web Kindle store). My reading stints are never hours long so I never tire of the screen.

Do people have experience using the Kindle app as a substitute for the iBookstore?

I agree with you Tim, I've never had the problem with eye strain. However, after using the iPad for some time, I am surprised the backlight doesn't dim a greater deal. It doesn't give me problems, but I could see how someone not used to staring at LED/LCD screens could have issues.

Not really seeing that problem to be honest. How long do we look at a laptop screen when preparing a presentation etc. I know I can spend a good few hours at a time working on my laptop when doing this. And to be honest I have never really experienced this 'eye strain' everyone talks about!

Yes, but as of now, if you're using your iPhone for reading, you can dim the back light significantly, and there isn't much eye strain. The only problem with using the iPhone though, is the small size of the screen. I would argue that much of the strain is also caused by the positioning of a computer screen (have to "look up" to read) and how textbooks are not formatted correctly on a laptop screen.

But wasn't the whole premise of Kindle, Nook, etc that the E-ink lets you read for an extended period of time without eye strain? For using resources like AccessMedicine (especially texts like the Current series, with 1-3 page topic outlines), an iPad could be great. While I agree reading medical texts doesn't involve going cover-to-cover at once, it often involves reading a 20 page chapter on a topic. And that seems like it would be too long still to stare a screen that, by virtue of its excellent display, is shining a pretty bright light back at me.
